Here at Bijonei, our team of highly skilled stylists have tried and tested dozens and dozens of techniques and products on curly hair over the years to try and find the best solution to gorgeous, silky, frizz-free curls. To help you embrace your lovely curly locks, we’ve put together our best hair care tips and tricks for naturally curly hair.

Shampooing & Conditioning Curls

  • Shampoo only once or twice a week to allow natural oils to work down the hair shaft, which helps to smooth the cuticle and minimise frizz.
  • We recommend using a shampoo and conditioner designed for curly hair as it is high in moisture which helps to rehydrate hair, again minimising fluff or frizz. Cleansing Curl Conditioner by Kerastase is a fabulous example of this, but there are many more if that doesn’t work for you.
  • Shampoo your hair twice – once to remove any product in preparation for the second shampoo, which actually cleans the hair and scalp.
  • Apply conditioner to mid lengths and ends. Conditioner is designed to work on the hair and not the scalp.
  • Comb your conditioner through in the shower to remove any knots. Rinse thoroughly and DO NOT comb or brush your hair again. Anything you do with your curls from now on should only be using the scrunching or twisting technique.

Styling Your Curls

  • Towel dry hair by squeezing out the moisture – microfibre towels and cotton fabrics work best to dry your hair with. Avoid rubbing the hair as again this can cause frizz.
  • Scrunch hair into place, as curly hair is best handled when wet.
  • Apply a product such as Kerastase Oleo Curl Cream or Bouncy & Tender by L’Oréal to wet hair which will help give your curl definition & smoothing.
  • When applying, place product onto palm and rub hands together to distribute the product and working from ends to root scrunch the product into the hair.
  • You can also use another technique where you take sections and twist each section, this technique will help enhance your curl, being smoother and giving it structure.
  • Allow the hair to air dry naturally or use a tool called a diffuser which attaches to the end of your blow dryer. This allows heat but removes the blow, ensuring the cuticle on the outside of your hair remains flat, smooth and shiny, and your curl is defined and not frizzy.

Once your hair is dry, the general rule of thumb is that the less you handle your hair, the better – as this can explode the curl and create fuzz. So try to avoid running your fingers through, combing or brushing your hair once its dry. If you’re in need or an oil or serum to control those flyways in-between washes, we have a range of options available in the salon.

Keeping your curls lovely, bouncy and frizz free will depend almost solely on the effort you put into your curls when you wash and style them. The effort definitely pays off, and you’ll notice that over time, the condition of your curls will dramatically increase with the right washing, styling and products used.
