Do you suffer from dandruff, sensitive scalp, oily hair or hair loss? Winter makes a great time to ask your stylist for a hair and scalp check. Our lives are warmed with artificial heating, open fires and hats, causing our hair and scalp to behave somewhat differently from the natural heat of summer!

With the change in season we can experience redness, flaky, or oily scalps. The scalp can also feel sensitive to the touch and in some cases, painful and sore. There are many influences as to why this is happening and requires a thorough consultation including lifestyle, medical and environmental effects. In all cases, we treat the scalp with shampoo and treatments and the hair with conditioner/treatments.

It is vitally important to cleanse your hair TWICE each time you shampoo it. The reason for this is ensuring a clean scalp and hair follicle to not only grow, but thrive! The first shampoo removes old product and surface factors while your second shampoo cleans your hair and scalp – similar to your skin regime!

Oily hair

To identify if your hair is oily, you will be shampooing it 3 or more times per week, due to flatness, or visible excessive sebum productivity.

Your hair can be any texture to be oily, this is merely overactive sebaceous glands and using a shampoo such as Kerastase Divalent Shampoo will ensure minimising of oil by regulating sebum productivity and allow your hair more volume. One of our stylists can show you the best shampooing massage technique that won’t aggravate this concern!

To condition your hair and scalp Keratase Masque Hydra-Apaisant is a renewing gel cream which helps hydrate and soothe the scalp whilst nourishing and repairing your hair length.

Sensitive hair

To identify with a sensitive scalp, you may feel such discomforts as a tight scalp, burning, redness, itching and tingling. This can be soothed with Kerastase Riche Derma-Calm and Bain Vital Derma Calm.

3 important things to know about sensitive scalps are…

  1. A sensitive scalp reacts to daily aggressions more than a healthy scalp
  2. The scalp cells become inflamed when faced with aggressors
  3. Scalp sensitivity can be affected by both internal and external factors, including pollution

Dandruff

A healthy scalp has cells that renew every 30-45 days – in the case of dandruff, the renewal process is sped up and exaggerated.

Dandruff are small pieces of dead skin that build up and flake off the scalp. Internal and external factors accelerate this rapid increase of skin cells, and there are two ways to treat this process…

Bain Anti-Pelliculaire is an anti-dandruff solution bath which will remove the flakes and protect you from dandruff for up to 8 weeks. It is reinforced with anti-relapse action.

Symptoms of scalp dandruff are as follows:

  • Visible flakes on the scalp and hair
  • Visible flakes on the shoulders
  • Scalp can be itchy and irritated

Keratase Masque Hydra-Apaisant will help hydrate and soothe the scalp whilst nourishing and repairing your hair length.

Hair loss

Hair loss is something we all experience, so understanding what is the normal fall is paramount. On average we lose 80-100 hairs a day and this is much more noticeable if your hair is past your shoulders, as it is inclined to cling to clothes and line shower walls.

Symptoms of a scalp losing hair are – excessive hair in your hairbrush, visible scalp which can vary from slight to largely visible, a receding hairline (at hairline or behind the ears) and noticeable hair fall. It is classed as excessive when you have significantly more than 100 hairs each day.

Many factors can lead to premature hair loss – from childbirth, stress over a long period of time and the accumulation and hardening of collagen. To shampoo your hair, we recommend Kerastase Bain Prevention which boots your hair production, thickens the hair fibre and brings instant volume.

Intense Anti-Thinning Cure is a treatment that gives each fibre strength and vitality, with increased shine which is smooth to the touch. One vial is used each day for six weeks and your stylist will show you how this is used.

Your personal stylist will consult with you one on one to help you determine which scalp and hair product is right for you and advise you on a programme to reduce or eliminate these concerns from your day to day life. These symptoms, while disheartening for you, are a common occurrence – so there is no need for you to feel embarrassed or awkward as we are happy to help you work through solving these symptoms.
