Are you experiencing hair loss that’s more than usual? If this is you and you want a better understanding of why this is happening and what you can do about it, we’re here to help.

Did you know is natural to lose 50 to 200 individual hairs EVERY day? Depending on your hairs natural hair density (that’s the amount of hairs per square centimetre) and the texture of your hair.

However if you have shorter hair, you may not necessarily notice this hair fall as it gets swept off in the wind or washed down plug holes when being shampooed.

Longer hair sticks around so much more, on your pillowcase, on your clothing, in your hair brush not to mention lining the walls of your shower! We sure notice this becomes prevalent when we are losing more hair than usual.

The life cycle of our hair

To understand the life of our hair, you first need to understand that there are four stages of hair growth, these are as follows:

  1. Anagen: Growing phase. The stages of hair growth begin with the anagen phase
  2. Catagen: Transition phase. The catagen phase starts when the anagen phase ends, and tends to last about 10 days or so
  3. Telogen: Resting phase. The telogen phase typically lasts around 3 months
  4. Exogen: Shedding or hair fall phase

So you can see by this description hair naturally has a shedding stage; however, even when born our hair isn’t all the same length and sheds daily so most of the time goes unnoticed.

Reasons for hair loss

Increase in hair fall can be very worrying, in fact 88% of women experience an increase in hair fall at least once in their life. So let’s look at some of the reasons this can happen.

Any hormonal change plays a huge part so pregnancy, menopause, ovulation, childbirth, as well as chemical damage, trauma, stress and medication.

In the last ten years as hairstylists we have seen a noticeable increase in alopecia due to the stress of life and living with covid. Alopecia areata is when the hair loss is in patches and is caused by your immune system attacking the hair follicle which is the follicle inside your head where each hair strand develops.

So what can you use to help create the best environment for your hair to grow and strengthen that hair strand as it surfaces from below the scalp.

Preventing hair loss

There are many hair growth products on the market today however advise and recommendation from Registered Professionals should be your first port to call.

At Bijonei we recommend our French range by Kerastase called Genesis. Genesis is the first range to treat both kinds of hair-fall – at the root and from fibre breakage, for all women, in all lifestyles, with all degree of hair fall.

Included in the range is the two formulations of shampoo Bain Hydra Fortifant (fine-med hair) and Bain Nutri Fortifant (med-thick hair) with Bain meaning Bathe. The conditioner is called Fondant Renforcateur (fine-med) and Masque Reconstituant (med-thick) and your stylist will recommend which of these is best suited to your hair type.

Next in the range and out of the shower is Ampoules Cure Anti-Chute Fortifiantes which is a box of take home treatments to be used during peaks of hair-fall, as the jelly like formula re-anchors the hair follicle into the scalp while providing optimal environment for future growth. These are used every day during increased hair fall and are amazing! The formula in the ampoules also soothes and decreases itchiness by reinforcing the natural protective barrier of the scalp.

For those needing ongoing support would use Serum Anti-chute Fortifant daily either in the morning or at night during a 6 week period as this product strengthens the hair fibre and improves the resistance to minimize hair fall.

Last but definitely not least for those of you that use heat to style your hair is the Défense Thermique which gives your hair fibre protection from heat up to 230 degrees (that’s all hair dryers, tongs, wands or straighteners) Think of it as a strengthening protecting blow dry fluid.
