To help you through this season and give your hair the care it needs, here are eight things you can do to prevent winter damage:

Help relieve an itchy, flaky scalp by shampooing less

Renewing of skin can smother the scalp, which not only causes itching and flaking, but can prevent hair growth as well. It’s recommend to lighten up on the cleansing/shampooing.

Try and reduce how often you shampoo your hair. For those who deal with major flaking and more other scalp issues, Kerastase Anti Pelliculaire is great. If your scalp is oily & your hair fine, Kerastase Bain Divilent is a great alternator because it cleanses without weighing the hair down.

Lock in extra moisture with a oil-based moisturiser

During the winter, blasts of dry air isn’t good for hair, no matter what type it is. You can combat this by adding in extra moisture to your hair care routine.

Curly, natural, relaxed and wavy hair types are all particularly sensitive to cold weather. By switching to an oil based moisturiser – such as Kerastase Ultime Exlixir – you can help to combat brittle texture, spilt ends and breakage.

Keep hair hydrated with a weekly conditioning treatment

By adding a hair mask to your weekly routine, you can help combat dry locks by replacing moisture lost in the dry air. This is when a good quality conditioner comes in handy.

Try to commit to a conditioning treatment once a week. During the conditioning process, you should baby your hair: slather the conditioner on, add a hot towel and leave it on for at least half an hour to allow the moisture to penetrate the hair shaft.

Try a darker shade at your next colour appointment

While platinum blonde is a beautiful colour that many strive to achieve, it can be incredibly damaging and hard to maintain during any season.

During the colder months, try leaving your roots a bit darker and having a toner or gloss applied under the weather is a bit nicer. As these types of colour services slowly washes out, the process won’t be as detrimental to your locks as a full lightening service would.

Use a leave in moisturising product

To further lock in moisture and to help combat static, use a leave in moisturising product such as the Kerastase Nutritive Crème Magistral.

Having floating, fine strands of hair stick out is a common occurrence during the winter months, and is often a sign of dryness. As well as weekly conditioning, be sure to lock moisture into your hair with a leave-in conditioner.

Hydrate your hair overnight

During winter nights, the dry air not only sucks moisture from your skin, but your hair as well.

Kerastase has just released a night serum for your hair which has a 8 hour action plan to replace and replenish that moisture while you sleep.

Its fragrance has 3 notes that expand over the 8 hours giving you first calming, deep relaxation followed by awakening as you stir to wake up in the morning. This is available at our salon now!

Line your winter hat with satin or silk

Did you know that cotton, wool and other coarse fabrics can cause breakage and split ends? This is particularly true if you have natural-textured or curly hair.

If you’re wearing an acrylic, wool or cotton hat, be sure to line it with satin or silk. Place it inside your hat to protect your hair, and carefully remove once you’ve arrived at your destination. For those with curly hair, use a small amount of oil based hair serum before putting on your hat.
